As a child growing up in the Netherlands, Carmen would always carry a small notebook in which she would write short stories and make drawings and cartoons. Her passion for the arts continued, and she received formal training at university.
Carmen immigrated to the United States in 1987 to pursue a professional pilot career, but found herself missing the opportunity to create. After relocating to Alaska in 2000, she decided to make time in her life to paint again.
She prefers to work on murals using latex/acrylic, but she also does smaller works in oils. Some examples include background scene panels for performances by the Valley Performing Arts Center, including the plays “Toad from Toad Hall”, “Sweet Charity”, and “It’s a Wonderful Life”, and murals for the Alaska State Fair, including “Goat Mountain”, “Three Big Chicks”, and “Pachyrhinosaurus”.
Her work is not limited to painting, as she recently completed “Cabby Long Legs” for the Veggie’s In Motion project in Palmer, and the smaller Spider Sculptures featured at the Art Pavilion at the Alaska State Fair.
